We sell drips that contain biotin. This page tells you why that matters before a blood draw.
Can a vitamin drip or injection really change your blood test results?
Yes. Certain vitamins in a drip or a shot don't just sit in your bloodstream — they can chemically interfere with how the lab machine measures something else, producing a number that is wrong without anything looking wrong.
Two ingredients do this, by two different mechanisms. Biotin (vitamin B7) interferes with a large family of blood tests that use biotin-streptavidin binding in their design. High-dose vitamin C can be counted as glucose by some blood sugar meters. Both have caused documented patient harm.
That is not a reason to avoid IV therapy. It is a reason to tell people about it, which takes about ten seconds.
Which blood tests does biotin interfere with?
Biotin interferes with immunoassays — the test format used for most hormone tests, cardiac markers, and tumor markers. The FDA and the AACC/ADLM laboratory guidance document name these specifically:
- Troponin — the heart attack marker
- TSH, free T4, free T3, total T3, thyroglobulin — thyroid panels
- NT-proBNP — a heart failure marker
- PTH, cortisol, prolactin, LH and FSH
- Testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, DHEA-S
- hCG — pregnancy tests
- Ferritin, vitamin B12, 25-hydroxyvitamin D
- PSA and other tumor markers
The direction of the error depends on the test format. In sandwich immunoassays — troponin, TSH, NT-proBNP, PTH, ferritin, PSA, hCG — excess biotin pushes the result falsely low. In competitive immunoassays — free T4, free T3, estradiol, testosterone, cortisol, B12 — it pushes the result falsely high.
That combination is why thyroid testing goes so wrong. Biotin drives TSH down and free T4 up at once, the exact laboratory signature of an overactive thyroid. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes case reports describing findings that falsely indicated Graves' disease and severe hyperthyroidism in people taking 10 to 300 mg of biotin a day. Real people have been worked up for a thyroid disease they did not have.
Why does a falsely low troponin result matter so much?
Because a falsely low troponin can make a heart attack look like a normal blood test. Troponin is the protein released when heart muscle is injured, and a normal troponin is a large part of how an emergency department decides you are safe to send home.
The FDA's safety communication, issued November 28, 2017 and updated November 5, 2019, states that prior to the 2017 communication the agency had received a report that one patient taking high levels of biotin died following low troponin test results from a test subject to biotin interference. The FDA said in 2019 that it continued to receive adverse event reports of falsely low troponin, and published a public list of troponin assays that had not addressed the risk.
You will not know which assay your hospital runs. The lab will. That is the entire reason the disclosure matters.
How much biotin is in a hair, skin and nails supplement?
Far more than you need, and often more than you realize. The Adequate Intake for adults is 30 micrograms a day — that is 0.03 mg. The FDA states it is aware of many supplements containing 20 mg of biotin, some up to 100 mg per pill with instructions to take several daily, and that supplements promoted for hair, skin and nail benefits contain biotin levels up to 650 times the recommended daily intake.
Laboratory guidance puts the concern threshold at about 5 mg and up. Multivitamins at doses up to 1 mg have not been reported to cause interference. The FDA also notes biotin turns up in prenatal multivitamins.
So if you take a hair-skin-nails gummy, you may already be well past the interference threshold before you ever book a drip.
How much biotin is in one of our drips?
We don't publish a milligram figure, and you should treat that as a reason to speak up rather than relax. Our Beauty drip and Glow drip both contain biotin, and biotin is also sold as a paid add-on to other drips on the menu. What those pages publish is "standard IV dose," not a number.
If you have labs coming up, ask your nurse for the milligrams in your specific bag before you book — ours or anyone else's. Until you have that number, assume a biotin-containing drip could put you over the roughly 5 mg threshold, and say so at the draw. Whatever is in the bag adds to whatever you already take by mouth.
One more honest note, since we sell these: the NIH fact sheet is direct that claims for biotin improving hair and nails in people who are not deficient are supported, at best, by only a few case reports and small studies. We think a beauty drip is a reasonable thing to enjoy. We don't think it is worth a wrong troponin.
Can high-dose vitamin C make a glucose meter read wrong?
Yes — falsely high, and this one matters most if you have diabetes. Some point-of-care meters measure sugar through an enzyme reaction at an electrode, and vitamin C oxidizes at that same surface, so the meter counts the signal as glucose.
Roche's evaluation report for the ACCU-CHEK Inform II lists ascorbic acid as an interfering substance and states that intravenous ascorbic acid resulting in blood concentrations above 3 mg/dL will cause overestimation of blood glucose results.
The consequences in the literature are severe. In one published case, a 71-year-old woman on high-dose IV vitamin C for uterine cancer had fingerstick readings above 500 mg/dL while her true venous glucose ran 16 to 34 mg/dL during the critical period. She was presumed to be in diabetic ketoacidosis and started on insulin. She later died, and the authors concluded hypoglycemia probably contributed to the cause of death. In another case, a dialysis patient given 50 mg/kg every six hours for 96 hours had false readings that persisted six days after the infusion stopped; he went home without lasting harm.
Both received sustained, protocol-level dosing well outside a wellness drip, and the first report notes previously described discrepancies ranged from 10 to 200 mg/dL. We don't publish a milligram figure for the vitamin C in a Myers cocktail either, so we won't tell you it sits safely under the line — ask. High-dose vitamin C already carries extra screening in our intake. If you have diabetes and use fingersticks, say you've had a drip.
How long should you wait between a drip and a blood draw?
There is no single number the FDA will stand behind, and you should be suspicious of any site that hands you one. The FDA's position is explicit: sufficient information is not available to know whether stopping biotin for any number of hours before testing will prevent incorrect results, and available data are insufficient to say how long biotin takes to clear the blood.
What lab professionals suggest, as a working guideline rather than a guarantee, comes from the AACC/ADLM guidance:
- After a 5 to 10 mg biotin dose, wait a minimum of eight hours before blood collection
- Washouts of up to 72 hours may be needed for assays with lower interference thresholds
- Anyone prescribed high-dose biotin therapy of 100 mg a day or more should abstain at least 72 hours, unless that is medically contraindicated
- Kidney impairment prolongs all of this — biotin clears more slowly and blood levels run higher
Practically, the simple move is to schedule your drip after your blood draw rather than before it. Labs first, drip second, and the problem disappears.
What should you tell the lab and your doctor?
Say it out loud before the needle goes in: "I've had an IV drip with biotin" or "I take a hair and nails supplement with biotin" — with the dose and date if you know them. Do the same for IV vitamin C if anyone is checking your blood sugar with a fingerstick.
Lab staff can act on that sentence. They can flag the specimen, run an assay that does not use biotin technology, or ask for a repeat draw. If the person drawing your blood does not seem sure what to do with it, say it again to the physician who ordered the test — the order, not the draw, is where it gets acted on. The laboratory guidance is candid about why: lab personnel often rely on clinician feedback to identify problems with results, and the FDA is blunt that it is difficult to identify samples containing biotin in the first place.
Tell your physician too, especially if a result has ever come back that didn't match how you feel; the FDA's advice to providers is to consider biotin interference when a result doesn't fit the clinical picture. Does this mean you should skip a beauty drip altogether?
No, for most people. This is a timing and communication problem rather than a poisoning one — biotin is water-soluble, and the Food and Nutrition Board has not set an upper intake limit for it. But the danger is real, and it is indirect: the harm comes from a clinician acting on a wrong number, which is why telling the lab matters more than avoiding the drip.
Some people should genuinely reorder things. If you are being worked up for chest pain, thyroid disease, a fertility problem, or a possible cancer, ask about holding biotin until the diagnostic questions are answered. If your biotin was prescribed, do not stop it on your own — high-dose biotin is a real therapy, not only a beauty supplement, and the FDA notes physicians may recommend up to 300 mg a day for conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Ask the physician who prescribed it.
If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, know that biotin interferes with hCG testing — in one published study, one of seven urine pregnancy tests failed to develop a control line in urine collected two to four hours after a 10 mg dose. Sort that out when you book, because moving an appointment is not always free: our published policy is no charge 24 or more hours ahead, a 50 percent fee inside 24 hours, and full charge within two hours or for a no-show.
If you have already had a biotin drip and have labs coming up, you don't need to panic — you need to mention it at the draw. If labs have already come back strange after a drip, tell the ordering physician and ask whether the assay uses biotin technology. It is a normal question and the lab can answer it.
