A hangover is not one thing. It is three problems stacked on top of each other: dehydration, GI inflammation, and a metabolic crash. Each of those has a different cause, a different timeline, and a different fix.
IV addresses two of the three faster than anything you can do orally. The third one, the metabolic component, has to resolve on its own over time. Anyone who tells you a drip "cures" a hangover is overpromising. Anyone who tells you IV does not help is underselling the actual mechanism.
Problem 1: dehydration
Alcohol is a diuretic. Specifically, it suppresses anti-diuretic hormone (ADH), which is the hormone that tells your kidneys to hold onto water. Without ADH telling them to retain fluid, your kidneys dump it.
This is why you pee a lot when you drink, and why the next morning you wake up genuinely depleted in fluid volume and electrolytes, not just thirsty, but volume-down. That is the dehydration component.
This is the easiest part for IV to solve. A liter of IV saline replaces volume in 45 minutes. Drinking a liter of water takes longer and, because the GI tract is also irritated, does not always absorb fully.
Problem 2: GI inflammation
Alcohol directly irritates the stomach lining and small intestine. This is why your stomach feels rough the morning after, and it is also why oral hydration is slower the morning after, your gut is inflamed and not absorbing efficiently.
You can take an anti-inflammatory orally (ibuprofen, etc.), but it sits on an already-irritated stomach and can make things worse before it makes them better.
IV anti-inflammatories (toradol, for example) bypass the gut completely. They go straight to your bloodstream and start reducing the inflammation that is making you feel terrible. This is the second component IV solves quickly.
Problem 3: the metabolic crash
This is where IV is honest about its limits. The metabolic component of a hangover is more complex. Your liver has been processing alcohol all night. Acetaldehyde, a toxic metabolite of alcohol, has been building up. Your blood sugar has crashed. Your sleep was probably bad. Your circadian rhythm got disrupted.
An IV can support recovery from this. B-complex helps with energy metabolism, glutathione supports liver function, hydration supports overall recovery. But this part takes time. The IV speeds it up; it does not eliminate it.
This is also why a Myers Cocktail or hangover IV the morning after a heavy night will make you feel significantly better, but it will not make you feel like you slept eight hours and had no alcohol. It cannot. Nothing can. The metabolic damage just has to work itself out.
What is actually in a hangover IV
Our standard Hangover Recovery IV is:
- 1 liter normal saline, to replace fluid volume
- B-complex, for energy metabolism support
- Vitamin B12, depleted by alcohol use
- Anti-nausea medication (Zofran), for the stomach feeling
- Anti-inflammatory (Toradol), for headache and inflammation
- Optional: extra glutathione, for liver support
The whole infusion runs about 45 minutes. Most clients feel meaningfully better by the end of the bag and significantly better within 1-2 hours after.
When IV is the right answer for a hangover
Honestly? For a moderate hangover, oral hydration and electrolytes are usually enough. Drink water, eat something, give yourself a few hours.
IV starts making more sense when:
- You feel genuinely sick, vomiting, severe nausea, can't keep water down
- You have a real obligation that day (event, meeting, travel)
- You had an unusually heavy night (multi-day, wedding, festival)
- You are part of a group that is doing recovery together
- You just want the fastest possible reset and you have the budget for it
What IV will not fix
The IV will help with the hangover. It will not undo a night out. The pictures still exist. The texts still went out. The 3 a.m. emotions you had still happened.
For the hangover specifically: hydration solved fast, inflammation reduced fast, metabolic recovery sped up but not eliminated. That is what IV can do. That is the honest mechanism.
If you want one, we have same-day slots open in most of OC on weekend mornings, and yes, that is by design.
